Should I Sell My LEGO® Built or Taken Apart?

Thinking about breaking down your built LEGO® sets before selling them? Here's why that's usually not necessary, and when it might actually lower the value.

We get this question all the time. People want to be helpful, so they spend a weekend taking everything apart before selling. In most cases, you don't need to.

Leave built sets built

A built set is easy to identify, and it's easy to see that it's complete. Once it's taken apart and mixed into a bin, its pieces are harder to tell apart from everything else, and a complete set can end up valued as bulk.

When taking it apart makes sense

  • You're moving or shipping it, and it would break anyway (bag it by set if you can)
  • It's a custom build (MOC) made from mixed pieces
  • It's already partly broken, with pieces scattered

If it's already apart

No problem. If you still have the instruction booklet or the box, keep it with the pieces so we know which set it was. If the sets are mixed together, just tell us which sets you remember owning. That helps too.

What about dust?

Leave it. We clean everything as part of our process, so there's no need to wash your LEGO® before selling it.
